The following list shows typical applications for asbestos in buildings prior to 2000 and could help you identify if you think it might be in yours:
- Structural supports - asbestos was sprayed onto columns and beams as fire protection. This is a highly hazardous form and generates a lot of fibres if disturbed by building modification works for example
- On pipes - an old style of thermal lagging for pipes and again a highly hazardous use
- Insulation boards - in doors, window panels and ceilings. These boards generate a lot of fibres if drilled or cut.
- Floor tiles - Some PVC and other plastic tiles contain asbestos
- Corrugated roofing sheets - common in industrial buildings
- Textured decorative coatings - These can have a small amount of asbestos which is well bonded into the material but can be dangerous when worked with.
